There are several types of dictionaries. Some of them are as follows:
- monolingual dictionary
a dictionary that uses the same language for the words and their definitions;
- bilingual dictionary (also translation dictionary)
a dictionary that is used to translate words or phrases from one language to another;
- collegiate dictionary
an abridged dictionary, that is of a size convenient to hold in the hand;
- learner’s dictionary
a dictionary specially written for those learning a foreign language;
- electronic dictionary
a dictionary whose data exists in digital form and can be accessed through a number of different media;
- rhyming dictionary
a specialist dictionary organized by the final sounds of words, used to write poetry;
- visual dictionary
a dictionary that primarily uses pictures to illustrate the meaning of words;
- pronunciation dictionary
a specialized type of dictionary that only contains phonetic transcriptions and recordings which tell you how to pronounce words correctly;
- encyclopedic dictionary
a dictionary that offers a more complete description and a choice of entries selected to convey a range of knowledge;
- glossary
an alphabetical list of words relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations; a brief dictionary.
